Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (浜松ホトニクス株式会社, Hamamatsu Hotonikusu Kabushiki-Kaisha) is a Japanese manufacturer of optical sensors (including photomultiplier tubes), electric light sources, and other optical devices and their applied instruments for scientific, technical and medical use.
Our history began in 1953 under the name of Hamamatsu TV Co., which manufactured phototubes that converted light into electrical signals. In 1983, we adopted the name Hamamatsu Photonics and broadened our aim to further develop opto-electronic technology.
By pursuing the ultimate limits of photoelectric conversion technology to approach the true nature of light, Hamamatsu Photonics has been challenging the unknown where no one has yet explored, with the aim of creating new industries by utilizing light and acquiring new knowledges.
The origins of Hamamatsu lie with Heihachiro Horiuchi, who had a dream of developing photoelectric devices. Horiuchi set up his business, Tokai Electronics Laboratory, in Hamamatsu City in 1948, and from there developed PV26 phototubes, which were used for automatic on/off switching of streetlights.
