Oct 25, 2023 · Answer. Zechariah (also called Zacharias or Zachariah) was a priest from the tribe of Levi who served the Lord during the reign of Herod in Judea. Zechariah’s wife, Elizabeth, was also a descendant of Aaron, and the Bible says they were godly, devout people (Luke 1:5–6).
May 3, 2019 · Who was Zechariah in the Bible? There are two notable figures in the Bible called Zechariah (also spelled Zacharias or Zachariah). One was an Old Testament prophet who foretold in the days of Haggai and who composed the book of Zechariah (Ezra 5:1; Zechariah 1:1).
Although the name Zechariah was common among the Hebrew people (twenty–eight Zechariahs are mentioned in the Old Testament), there are Bible teachers who identify the Zechariah of this book with the “Zacharias” whom our Lord mentioned in Matthew 23:35 as having been martyred.
Zechariah is the 11th book of The Twelve. Zechariah is set after the return of the exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem. We are told in the book of Ezra (Ezra 5:1-2 ) that Zechariah and Haggai together challenged and motivated the people to rebuild the temple and look for the fulfillment of God’s promises.
