Jun 23, 2022 · Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (which was retitled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer 's Stone for American markets), written by a then-unknown author, was released in 1997. Nobody behind the book's publication could have predicted the massive, culture-defining property the book would eventually become, least of all the person who illustrated the iconic original UK cover.

In 1996, Thomas Taylor was 23 years old, fresh out of art school, an aspiring illustrator, and soon to be cover artist for an “unknown author,” J.K. Rowling. Using Rowling’s description, Taylor was the first person to give the boy wizard a public face, establishing the way the world would see Harry Potter.

In 1998, Scholastic in the United States took notice of the series’ burgeoning popularity and began publishing the series, beginning with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Mary Grand Pré illustrated all seven books, her style becoming synonymous with the US editions.
While the series was often recognized as children’s literature, it gained a large adult following. The US stuck with Grand Pré’s artwork, while the UK released ‘adult’ versions with less whimsical covers up to the fourth book.
In 2010, the UK introduced a Signature Edition, featuring covers illustrated by Scottish linocut artist Clare Melinsky. The hardcover collector’s editions from both countries were extravagant – embossed with gold and exuding elegance.
To mark the 15th anniversary of the Sorcerer’s Stone, Scholastic unveiled a re-released paperback series with new cover art by Kazu Kibuishi. The redesigned spines, when aligned, formed a striking silhouette of Hogwarts – a delightful addition to any Potterhead’s bookshelf!
Adult versions saw a major refresh in 2015 with intricate artwork by woodcut artist Andrew Davidson. These beautifully complex covers offered a more mature appeal.
The 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stonein 2017 was celebrated with Bloomsbury releasing special house editions in the Hogwarts house colors.
