Hank was Annie's doctor when she was pregnant with Matt, a pregnancy that almost ended in devastation. He nearly almost killed Matt while delivering him as a baby, putting him in a incubator for a month. After almost nearly killing Matt, he went back to medical school for another 3 years. After that, he decided to dedicate his life working for high risk babies. When she first found out that Dr. Hastings was back in the Glenoak Hospital, Annie was frantic. She was afraid he would have to be the one to deliver her twins if she ever went into early labor. In the end, though, Annie ordered Dr. Hastings to be there after the doctors were ordering a C-section and she wanted a natural birth. After all this drama, Dr. Hastings marries Eric's sister, Julie. We also find out Julie is pregnant in the same episode.
They had some marriage problems in the beginning of their married life, such as when Julie almost left Hank in Just You Wait And See, but they always end up back together. In the same episode, Julie gives birth to their baby, Erica.

He leads a charmed life - fancy sports cars, staying in nice places, fancy hobbies, and he's a ladies man. All we know is he's a retired Army captain, but Watson was too and was always struggling for money. Hastings never is and he lived in a time when things cost more.
While in real life, if a woman has (pre-)eclampsia during a pregnancy, she will be very much likely to develop this condition again during subsequent pregnancies (not to mention that the chacce of developing the condition is even higher when a woman is expecting twins!).
Captain Arthur Hastings, OBE, is the partner and best friend of Agatha Christie's Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. He was first introduced in her novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles[1] and appears in many subsequent Poirot stories and novels though generally only as the narrator.
