Jun 22, 2023 · It was through a generous invitation from Sir William Bragg, Bernal’s former supervisor, to use his London X-ray facilities that Dorothy Crowfoot met her future husband, Thomas Hodgkin. Initially the couple settled in Oxford with their three children while she pursued her career as a Fellow of Somerville.
Hodgkin was in Ghana with her husband when they received the news that she had been awarded the Nobel Prize. She acquired from her mother, Molly, a concern about social inequalities and a determination to do what she could to prevent armed conflict.

Meanwhile in 1937 she had married Thomas Hodgkin and had been bringing up a family of three children, Luke, Elizabeth, and Toby. Thomas found his métier as a lecturer in adult education and spent much time away from Oxford in the north of England during the war and later in Africa, dedicated to educational projects in the developing nations.
