Oct 8, 2017 · Brainerd Mission was a multi-acre mission school situated on Chickamauga Creek near present-day Chattanooga. Named for eighteenth-century missionary David Brainerd, it was the largest institution of its type among the Eastern Cherokees.
David Brainerd (April 20, 1718 – October 9, 1747) was an American Presbyterian minister and missionary to the Native Americans among the Delaware Indians of New Jersey. Missionaries such as William Carey and Jim Elliot , and Brainerd's cousin, the Second Great Awakening evangelist James Brainerd Taylor (1801–1829) cite Brainerd as inspiration.
In the center of the photo, an unassuming clump of trees marks the cemetery of a historically significant, yet often forgotten place. The Brainerd Mission was named for a revered New England missionary David Brainerd, who died in 1747.
First: Missionary David Brainerd, for whom the mission was named, never came close to Tennessee and was dead 70 years before the mission opened. Yet roads, schools, churches, businesses and an entire suburb are named for him.
