Ruth Catlin started Miss Catlin's School in 1911 in Northwest Portland. She built a new school on Northwest Culpepper Terrace and moved into that facility six years later. In1926, the Hillside building was added to the campus, becoming known as the Catlin-Hillside school.
Her mother is Sophia Tzeng, and her father is Shintaro Okamoto. Okamoto is no longer in contact with her father, and she has stated that she experienced sexual abuse and domestic violence from him in her childhood.

In the 1960’s, some new school traditions that were initiated were the all-school ski carnival and exchange letter with the Fletcher School in Southern Rhodesia.
