The organised Church dates from the time of St. Margaret, wife of Malcolm Canmore, in the 11th Century. The foundations laid by St. Margaret were built on by her son, David I, when he succeeded to the throne in 1124.

St David's Church was commissioned by Cecil, Marchioness of Lothian. Holy Souls' Altar, S side aisle and the burial vault were commissioned by Walter Kerr in 1877. The Church provided 500 sittings in 1882. The Church was extensively redecorated in 1894.
