The Statue of Alfred the Great is located in the centre of Winchester, England. It was commissioned in 1899 as part of the celebrations of the millennium since the death of Alfred the Great, the Saxon monarch considered one of the founders of England. The 4.5 meter bronze statue was designed by Hamo Thornycroft and weighs just over 5 tones. The most symbolic aspect of the statue is the positioning of the sword, which is set with the point facing downwards and held just below the hilt.
