    Created in a joint venture between Sanrio and Sega Toys, the series was produced by the third character designer of Hello Kitty, Yuko Yamaguchi. The characters were designed and illustrated by the character designer for popular Cinnamoroll, Miyuki Okumura.

    The series started with 33 characters at launch, and ended with 42 in total official Jewelpet.

    There are currently 42 Jewelpets in the franchise, each with a a gemstone(often their name) and special abilities that relate to the trait they best embody. Often these abilities allow them to bring out their special traits in humans. For example Ruby's trait of luck will allow her to enhance a person's luck. In later series her ability is changed to courage which allows her to bestow courage on humans to perform something extraordinary.

    The initial Jewelpets:

    1.Ruby: One of the three main characters alongside Garnet and Sapphie, Ruby is a white japanese hare. She is the Jewelpet representing Luck or Courage(depending on the series). Her gemstone is the ruby.

    2.Garnet: One of the three main characters alongside Ruby and Sapphie, Garnet is a pink persian cat. She is the Jewelpet representing Love. Her gemstone is the garnet.

    3.Sapphie: One of the three main characters alongside Ruby and Garnet, Sapphie is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. She is the Jewelpet representing Friendship. Her gemstone is the sapphire.

    4.King: A french bulldog who wears a crown. He is the Jewelpet of Health. His gemstone is the onyx.

    •Jewelpet characters appeared at Sanrio's themepark, Sanrio Puroland where they had their own stage show. They were also part of the meet and greets until 2017 where they were delisted, replaced by fellow Sanrio X Sega Toys creation; Rilu Rilu Fairilu.

    •Ruby still occasionally appears at the park at certain events.

    •As Sanrio related characters, the Jewelpets as a collective are entered into the Sanrio Character ranking, where Sanrio fans vote for their favourite characters from their properties with Ruby being used as the representative. Here are their rankings:
