Jan 13, 2020 · In 1876, the doors of a new hospital opened. It was a long, low structure of two wings reaching from the professor's house into the Diag. Though it was generally called the Pavilion Hospital, its official name was University Hospital, the first facility to bear that title.
The School of Nursing colonized the old St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital on Ingalls Street. The School of Public Health built a new headquarters on Observatory Street. The W.K. Kellogg Eye Center was planned for a site on nearby Wall Street.
For 175 years, since our founding as the University of Michigan's medical school in 1848, we have been on a quest to transform the future of health care through leading-edge medical education, groundbreaking discoveries, and extraordinary care.
In 1941 the Regents established the nursing program as an independent university teaching unit, the University of Michigan School of Nursing. Although recognized as independent, the school's senior administrative officer was not given the title of dean until 1955.
As early as 1806, Father Gabriel Richard, who ran several schools around the town of Detroit, had requested land for a college from the governor and judges appointed by the President to administer the territory.
In 1925 the university opened a 280,000 square feet (26,000 m 2) hospital building at a cost of $3.85 million. It was designed by Albert Kahn and built by Thompson-Starrett Company. In 1986 this building, known as "Old Main," was replaced by a new one farther away, and it was demolished in 1989.

Although the School of Nursing had been recognized as independent since 1941, it wasn’t until 1955 that Rhoda Reddig Russell was appointed as the first dean of the school. Until then, the school operated under the direction of an administrative committee including the hospital and medical school.
