The School of Nursing colonized the old St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital on Ingalls Street. The School of Public Health built a new headquarters on Observatory Street. The W.K. Kellogg Eye Center was planned for a site on nearby Wall Street.
Oakwood Hospital - Dearborn, a six floor community-based healthcare facility, opened its doors on January 5, 1953. Following World War II, it became clear Dearborn needed its own hospital. A decision was made to build a "voluntary" hospital on land donated by Henry Ford II & Ford Motor Company.
By the 1950s, the whole facility at 10149-10151 Michigan was known as the Dearborn Medical Center Hospital. Much of what is visible along Michigan Avenue was constructed as part of a renovation and expansion project in the early 1970s.
