Thornleigh College was originally a boys school founded in 1925 by the Salesians of Don Bosco at the request of the Clergy of Bolton. The school uniform (blazer) was brown with the school badge picked out in yellow on the breast pocket. It became a direct grant grammar school catering for a wide area in Lancashire.

There used to be a family shop in Chorley, Lancs that made sausages and pork pies, and probably other items.The business was owned, I believe, by Thornleys. The far end features a wall 7 feet high x 46 feet long. Inserted at the centre of the wall and part of it, approached by a path, is the monument bearing the dedication and names. The monument is 7 feet high x 9 feet wide, with low raised centre top. There is a plain cross raised in half relief in the middle, with the quotation below.
