  1. While these can all be appropriate responses, there’s one source of inspiration and encouragement many of us often overlook: the women of the Bible. Despite the fact that these remarkable women lived thousands of years ago, in a time and culture vastly different from our own, their lives and stories are still full of hope, inspiration, and encouragement for us today.

    An old prophetess, Anna had spent her life at the temple in Jerusalem, devoted to prayer and fasting. The book of Luke describes how the sight of young Jesus led her to evangelize about Him. Anna shows us that we must keep watchfor and be ready to praise God’s works.

    A cloth dealer in Thyatira, Lydia was a believer when she heard the Apostle Paul speak one Sabbath. But his words brought her to a deeper faith, and her house eventually became a meeting place for other followers. Lydia shows us that we are to grow in lovefor God and for others.

    Rebekah, the wife of Isaac, was childless until God blessed them with twin boys, Esau and Jacob. She asked the Lord why the babies were pushing against each other inside her, and Genesis details the surprising prophecy.     • Eve. She's there in the beginning. In the earliest chapters of Genesis, we read about God creating her to be a companion for man. Together, Adam and Eve get themselves kicked out of the Garden of Eden.
    • Sarah. Along with her father-in-law, Terah, husband, Abraham, and nephew, Lot, Sarah moved far away from home. Twice. She was also one of several women who suffered from infertility in the Bible.
    • Hagar. She has the honor of being the mother to Abraham's first-born son, Ishmael. Reading her story in Genesis 16, 17 and 21 will break a reader's heart.
    • Rebekah. When their son was old enough to take a wife, Abraham made his servant promise he wouldn't get a wife for Isaac from the Canaanite women. He wanted a young maiden from his own kin.
