Beautiful and Charming: Daisy’s name captures her key attributes: she is delicate and decorative. This is also revealed by her attire when she first meet her: her white dress "rippl[es] and flutter[s] as if [it] had just been blown back in after a short flight around the house" (Chapter 1).
Daisy, who is in her early twenties, has a three-year-old daughter, named Pammy. The child is looked after by a nanny, and during the one scene where we see mother and daughter together Daisy’s response to Pammy seems shallow and inadequate.
Gender roles are distinctly defined in The Great Gatsby, harkening back to the societal norms of the patriarchal 1920s era. Men are portrayed as dominant, controlling, and wealthy. Women, in contrast, are often depicted as commodities or prizes to be won.
