The Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (SS.H.J.M.) are a group of Catholic Religious Sisters who were established in London, England, in 1903. There they are commonly known as the Chigwell Sisters.
At Chigwell we have a community of sisters, many who are involved in pastoral ministries. Adjacent to Chigwell Convent is St John’s Special School and Post 18/19 Provision supporting children and young people with special educational needs.
In the first half of the twentieth century the Chigwell Sisters spread rapidly responding to the needs of the poor in various parts of London, Liverpool, Glasgow, and The Outer Hebrides; then later to Cork in Ireland and Cardiff in Wales. New convents opened also in smaller towns and rural areas.
