The Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (SS.H.J.M.) are a group of Catholic Religious Sisters who were established in London, England, in 1903. There they are commonly known as the Chigwell Sisters.
The Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, whose base is the Chigwell convent, have strong links with El Salvador and particularly the martyred Archbishop Oscar Romero. Sisters Anne Griffin spent many years working amongst the poor in El Salvador, carrying on the legacy of Archbishop Romero to be the voice of the voiceless.
At Chigwell we have a community of sisters, many who are involved in pastoral ministries. Adjacent to Chigwell Convent is St John’s Special School and Post 18/19 Provision supporting children and young people with special educational needs.
Sister Oliver built Marian House for the care of our elderly sisters. She received on behalf of the Congregation an O.B.E. from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This was in recognition of our work with and for persons with special needs, a work that continues today in many different countries.
