Early carbon and rod filament incandescent electric lamp 1878-9. Made by the English chemist, Joseph Swan (1827-1914). The first practical electrical incandescent lamps were invented independently in the late 1870s by Joseph Swan in England and Thomas Edison in the USA.
The incandescent light bulb, which Swan independently developed around the same time as Thomas Alva Edison in the United States, was a transformative innovation. With his bulb, Swan ushered in a new era of electric illumination, replacing the unreliable and hazardous gas lighting of the time.

It was not until 1879 that the American inventor Thomas Edison and his British colleague Joseph Swan – independently – invented light bulbs that had commercial potential. They overcame the main technical obstacles by inserting carbon incandescent filament in a vacuum glass bulb.
