Jan 28, 2020 · Early experimenters such as Joseph Swan began trialling materials to make a durable filament as early as the 1840s, although it wasn't until the 1870s that he and Thomas Edison most famously produced commercially viable lamp bulbs.
Prior to the start of the Philips operations in Hamilton, the Dutch giant had a rather scattered lamps business in the UK. It had never built its own British factories and operated based on joint ventures and acquisitions of other smaller companies.

It was not until 1879 that the American inventor Thomas Edison and his British colleague Joseph Swan – independently – invented light bulbs that had commercial potential. They overcame the main technical obstacles by inserting carbon incandescent filament in a vacuum glass bulb.
Aug 9, 2021 · Much later, in 1850 the English physicist Sir Joseph Wilson Swan began working on a light bulb using carbonised paper filaments in an evacuated glass bulb. By 1860 he was able to demonstrate a working device, and obtained a UK patent covering a partial vacuum, carbon filament incandescent lamp.
WWI: Edison and Swan Electric Light works (Ponder's End, Middlesex) doubled production of bulbs and tubing; special glasses developed for 0.5W lamps, signalling lamps and wireless valves. Edison Swan and Cossor began quantity production of thermionic valves for the armed forces [4] .

In grand houses, lamps required a new room for the cleaning of their glass shades. The Duke of Rutland at Belvoir Castle had a trifling 400 for his hard-working servants to polish. Yet the oil lamp would soon be superseded by gas, which made its appearance in factories, theatres and street-lighting long before it penetrated the home.
