Mar 15, 2005 · My 88 Golf GL has over 236,800 miles, with original engine, tranny, and clutch, and still doesn't burn any noticeable amounts of oil. Repeated problems I've had are CV joints and the ground connections on the intake manifold for the engine management system.
Jan 31, 2016 · The engine started making a loud high-pitched drone/whine on the motorway when going over 60mph. A few weeks later this noise now appears on acceleration at all speeds. (the car has also struggled to reach 70mph+ for some time now, which may or not may be connected)

Well I have just had my fan belts changed and when I start up the car it makes a screeching noise (like bones going threw a band-saw to be more specific) till it warms up a bit and then the noise dies down...however if I use the heater or fan this awful noise returns.
Aug 15, 2012 · Don't know what 1.8 you have but an early solid lifter can make noise (tappet shims) and that won't usually go away the later motor with hyd tappets will clear itself of any noise after warm up or on accelaration unless lifters are very clogged.
