Feb 10, 2024 · The Black Beaches of Santorini. Though every beach has a volcanic sand mix, only those with the highest concentration of it have the privilege of being called ‘black beaches.’ Here is a list of the blackest beaches of Santorini, each of them a gem and a must-see: Kamari Beach
- Perissa Beach. Perissa Beach, located on the eastern coastline of Santorini, is a small stretch of soft, black sand near the town of Perissa. This is widely acknowledged as the official black sand beach on Santorini, and the one visited on the majority of the island tours and day trips.
- Kamari Beach. Kamari Beach is another popular black sand and pebble beach on the eastern side of Santorini. This one is located on the opposite side of the Mesa Vouno mountain from Perissa and features a similar long stretch of soft sand and many sunbeds to tan on.
- Perivolos Beach. While technically joined, Perivolos Beach is the continuation of Perissa Beach, leading for approximately 2 kilometers to the south, where it joins again to Agios Georgios Beach.
- Vlychada Beach. Moving on to the southern tip of Santorini and we'll find another gorgeous black pebble beach edged by tall volcanic cliffs called Vlychada Beach.

- What You Need to Know About Black Sand Beaches. Because the island of Santorini is a volcanic island, the coarse sand is actually black pebbles. They’re pulverised rock left over from when the active volcano did its thing and covered the island in lava and ash.
- When Can You Enjoy the Beach in Santorini? Although I have swum at the end of April you’ll probably enjoy the Aegean Sea more from about the middle of May if it’s nice and warm outside.
- Perissa and Perivolos Beach. The main beach in Santorini, and probably the most well known, runs along the southeast coast of the island. This approximately 5km long beach combines the beaches of Perissa, Perivolos and Agios Georgios right at the end.
- Kamari Beach. The beach resort of Kamari is the other really popular seaside tourist destination. It has the same dark sand but the beach isn’t as long as at Perissa.
