- Every time in more than 20 years that Ofsted visited Oulton Academy (formerly Royds) in South Leeds, its inspectors rated it either Inadequate, the worst of the four possible outcomes, or Requires Improvement, the third worst. It became an “orphan” school, a school that no one – not the Local Authority nor any Academy Trust – wanted.

The April 2024 inspection, was the school’s first since it opened to its first group pupils in September 2021. It is now heavily oversubscribed and 'the school of choice' for the area.
