There are lots of mods which add little pieces to the game and extend the play, like more woods, stone, and growing food on hills. My personal favorite is Red Ketchup's Editor's Choice, and if that was the only one available, I'd be perfectly happy with it.
The most popular mods are Colonial Charter, and Megamod. Megamod is the most extensive mod for Banished, regrouping lots of different other mods. But I mainly use Colonial Charter, as it contains more than enough stuff :)

I would recommend getting experience with just Banished, no mods, to start. Once you have a few runs and can keep a stable population, then go for mods. This game is brutal and you peeps will die until you get the hang of it.
