Sep 24, 2023 · Here are excerpts from an interview with the film’s writer-director John Carney. Via A.Frame: For writer and director John Carney, his new film, Flora and Son, began very simply. “It all started with the image of a woman pulling a guitar out of a dumpster,” he says.
John Carney began his film career writing, producing and directing two award-winning short films, SHINING STAR and HOTEL, and directing videos for Irish Band The Frames. His first feature film, NOVEMBER AFTERNOON, a low-budget black-and-white production, was voted Best Feature of 1997 by the Irish Times, and ran on the U.S. festival circuit.
Below, Carney shares with A.frame the five films that have been the most important to him as a filmmaker, including the '80s fantasy epic that exposed him to the power of cinema and the indie film that made him want to pick up a camera for the first time.
