Carnuntum (from Ancient Greek Καρνοῦς (Carnous) according to Ptolemy) was a Roman legionary fortress (Latin: castra legionis) and headquarters of the Pannonian fleet from 50 AD. After the 1st century, it was capital of the Pannonia Superior province.
Carnuntum, the most important ancient Roman legionary camp of the upper Danube frontier, situated at Petronell, 20 miles (32 km) east of Vienna. It was the emperor Tiberius’s base in his attacks on the Marcomanni (ad 6), although a fort for one legion was first erected under the emperor Claudius.

History. Carnuntum once ranked among the most important cities of the Roman province Pannonia. Built as a stronghold against the Barbaricum on the other side of the Danube Limes, it also was a crossover point of the Amber Road and occupied a major strategic, political and economic role.
