Feb 21, 2023 · Inspired by director John Lasseter’s real-life cross-country road trip, the film still draws families and fans to iconic attractions featured (or riffed on) in the movie, including the remaining Wigwam Villages, trading posts, curiosity shops, and vintage filling stations. Here are seven real-life locations that inspired the makers of Cars.
Feb 11, 2018 · Radiator Springs in real life is a mash up on many different locations along the Route 66! There’s a scene in the original Cars movie where Lightening McQueen and Sally are sat on a road that’s quite high up, over looking the valley floor.
- Cozy Cone Motel. Sally’s Cozy Cone was actually inspired by a few real Route 66 Locations. Sally’s neon signage and office are inspired by the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, New Mexico.
- Radiator Springs Landscape. That classic mountain that looks like a radiator cap is inspired by a real natural landmark. The real Route 66 location that Inspired Cars is called the Tucumcari Mountain.
- Lizzie’s Curio Shop. I don’t know about you, but I love having souvenirs and merchandise to remember my travels. If you go on a real Route 66 journey, stop by Hackberry General Store in Hackberry, Arizona.
- Wheel Well Motel. When you travel the Mother Road, you’ll likely want to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life. I can picture an easy day at the Wheel Well Motel that Sally takes Lightning to visit, though its glory days are over.

- Cars on the Route – Galena, Kansas. I began my road trip in Galena, Kansas at Cars on the Route. This fully restored Kan-O-tex service station is home to the original truck that inspired the design of Tow Mater.
- Sandhill Curiosity Shop – Erick, Oklahoma. The next stop on my list was the Sandhill Curiosity Shop. This is a very famous location along Route 66. And it’s not as much a “shop” as it is a museum of sorts.
- U-Drop Inn – Shamrock, Texas. Just past the Oklahoma/Texas border lies the U-Drop Inn. This beautifully restored location was built in 1936 as a gas station and café for passersby traveling along the route.
- The Big Texan & Cadillac Ranch – Amarillo, Texas. The next two stops are located near Amarillo. The first was the Big Texas Steak Ranch. This establishment is right off of I-40 and home to the very famous 72oz steak challenge (where patrons are given one hour to consume a 72oz steak + a slew of sides.
