Dec 28, 2023 · “Where the Red Fern Grows” is a heart-touching adventurous tale that unfolds in the rugged Ozarks of Oklahoma during the early 1930s. The story is narrated by Billy Colman, who, as an adult, reminisces about his childhood after encountering a stray coonhound in a fight.
Plot Summary. As the novel opens, Billy Colman comes upon a stray coonhound fighting with a pack of dogs. He rescues the stray and takes it home, setting it free as soon as it is well enough to return home.
In RED FERN II, Billy Coleman returns from WWII to his grandfather's home in Louisiana and tries to readjust to civilian life. But the killing he witnessed in the war, along with the fact that he has lost a leg to an enemy bullet, have embittered him.
Where the Red Fern Grows is a 1961 children's novel by Wilson Rawls about a boy who buys and trains two Redbone Coonhounds for hunting. [1] It's a work of autobiographical fiction based on Rawls' childhood in the Ozarks.
