The Buena Vista Lagoon is the home of the Buena Vista Audubon Society which operates a small but very informative Nature Center on the north edge of the lagoon. Two trails near the Nature Center offer many opportunities to see the lagoon inhabitants. Picnic facilities are also available.
This nature center and its 1/2 mile loop trail through the lagoon make a great family outing. The center had many displays of native birds and animals, as well as a kid's counter, with bones, feathers, rocks, and other natural items to touch and explore - and it's free!

I can not tell you how many headaches this small little dam has given to this community There are four options: 1. Restore the lagoon to a saltwater marsh flushed by the Ocean. 2. Create a hybrid lagoon with the eastern half freshwater and the western half saltwater. 3. Dredge and improve the existing freshwater lagoon. 4. Do nothing.

The Buena Vista Ecological Reserve is a 350-acre freshwater lagoon habitat 36 miles north of the San Diego Natural History Museum. The lagoon and its wetland habitat is nestled between Carlsbad and Oceanside, California with views of the Pacific Ocean.
Buena Vista Lagoon lies in North County San Diego, covering approximately 220 acres with most of the area owned and managed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) as the state's first Ecological Reserve.
