Shutter Island was filmed in Massachusetts. Hurricane scenes took place at the Wilson Mountain Reservation in Dedham, Massachusetts. Other filming locations were Medfield State Hospital, Borderland State Park, Turner Hill Golf and Racquet Club, and Whittenton Mills.
Scene was shot in the abandoned Whittenton Mills complex in Taunton, nearly 40 miles south of Boston. For filming, a large number of scenery, military towers, gates, fences with barbed wire had to be built.
