By Bill Spalding. Until annexed in 1912 to become a district of the City of Glasgow, Partick was a village (later an independent burgh) lying west of Glasgow. Fossil Grove in Whiteinch Park contains prehistoric fossilised tree stumps.

For some time the western boundary was near where Anderson Street is today, not moving further west until the mid-1800s.
Feb 7, 2024 · Growing up in Partick was a pleasure reserved by many proud Glaswegians - but it was only just over a 100 years ago in 1912 when the burgh of Partick was annexed by the city of Glasgow.
Partick became a Police Burgh in 1852, with the first council led by the senior magistrate, David Tod, who would become Partick's first provost. A public meeting took place on 4th August 1852 to elect commissioners and appoint magistrates to establish the new burgh.
At the Thornwood Roundabout Dumbarton Road disappears under the Expressway, in a maze of flyovers, to re-emerge in the rather forlorn district of Whiteinch. Few people consider it so today, but from its foundation Whiteinch was part of Partick burgh.
The original Burgh Hall and police station can be seen at the back of Morrison's car park, on Anderson Street. Everyone knew this building as "Partick Marine" as the police force had a marine division, although they were only responsible for the quay and warehouses and didn't take to sea.
