Mamma Mia! (promoted as Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus' Mamma Mia!) is a jukebox musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on songs recorded by Swedish group ABBA and composed by members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. The musical's title is taken from the group's 1975 chart-topper "Mamma Mia".
The song's name is derived from Italian and literally translates as "my mother", but is used as an interjection in situations of surprise, anguish, or excitement. The song was ABBA's first number one in the UK since "Waterloo" in 1974.

In 1999, the musical stage production Mamma Mia! opened in London. The show was based on ABBA's songs, which were used in the production. The show opened on Broadway in 2001 and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical, but lost to Thoroughly Modern Millie.
It was clear from the beginning that ABBA and their record company, Polar Music, really believed in ‘Mamma Mia’. The song was one of four songs for which they filmed promo clips at the end of April 1975, the other three being ‘SOS’, ‘I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do’ and ‘Bang-A-Boomerang’.
