Civilian Conservation Corps enrollees from Camp Bear Creek built the reservoir in 1934 and ever since it has been a favorite spot for forest vistors. Today, Bear Lake is the location of the popular Horse Camp, where horse enthusiasts camp out and ride the forest's many bridle trails.

The horse camp has a gravel drive with grassy campsites and plenty of shade. High line/tie rails, stock water and a port-a-john are available. The trails are closed to horse use from December 16 to April 14 each year. Check map for another trailhead. Trail rating: moderate to challenging.
Salt Fork State Park Campground is a large campground with sites for all sizes of RVs. There are Full Hookup, 50-amp Electric, and Non-electric sites. An Equestrian Campground and Primitive Campground (tent only) are also available. Reserve online or by calling (866) 644-6727.
Routes can be planned using a map of the trail system and our chart of loops, distances, trail markers and start/end points. All of Lake Vesuvius horse trails are marked with gray diamonds though the diamonds have different color dots depending on the loops.
