The Dutch National Monument is an obelisk in Dam Square in Amsterdam which commemorates those who died during the Second World War. Germany invaded the Netherlands on 10 May 1940, bringing the formally neutral country into the war and occupying it thereafter.
The National Monument on Dam Square stands in tribute to the casualties of World War II and subsequent armed conflicts involving the Dutch nation. The monument consists of a central column made of concrete in the shape of a conical pillar.
