Farms around the country were suffering but from different causes. In the Great Plains, drought conditions meant that little was growing at all, while in the South, bumper crops and low prices meant that farmers could not sell their goods at prices that could sustain them.
The country was brought closer together by the railroads. Western states could seek statehood. The mind-set of settlers was changed by the railroads. They helped populate the West. The railroads added jobs and stimulated growth in other industries. The railroads changed trade relations with Asia.
Most were concentrated in urban areas, particularly in the Northeast, around the Great Lakes, and on the West Coast. And so the American workforce began to migrate from the countryside to the city. The speed with which American cities expanded was shocking.
