Choctaw County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,204. [1] . Its county seat is Hugo. [2] Formerly part of the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory, this county was reorganized and redefined in 1907, at the time of Oklahoma statehood.
The Yowani were a historical group of Choctaw people who lived in Texas. [ 1 ] Yowani was also the name of a preremoval Choctaw village. [ 2 ] When this area became part of the United States under the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, many of the resident Indian tribes wanted to emigrate to less hostile environs.
