In Scripture Capernaum is not mentioned outside the Gospels. When Jesus finally departed from Nazareth, He dwelt in Capernaum ( Matthew 4:13 ) and made it the main center of His activity during a large part of His public ministry.
Capernaum was a small fishing village located along the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee. The Sea of Galilee, also known as Lake Kinneret, is a modest lake about 13 miles long and 8 miles wide and surrounded by mountains. The river Jordan enters the lake on the north side and exits to the south as it makes its way to the Dead Sea.
