Aug 9, 2024 · Beyond stalking an Outlander film location, there is plenty to see and do here. You can explore the ruins, discover the gardens, dress up in traditional clothes and learn about what life was like here in years gone by. Here’s a complete guide to the Aberdour Castle Outlander film location!
- Doune Castle, Scotland. Doune Castle was used as the filming location for Castle Leoch, the home of Clan MacKenzie. Fans are first introduced to the castle when Claire and Frank visit the ruins in the very first episode of the series.

But instead of filming in Inverness, the series instead used the town of Falkland to recreate Inverness in the 1940s (season one) and the 1960s (seasons two and four).
- Blackness Castle, Scotland. Blackness Castle was used as the filming location for Fort William in the series. Fans will remember the gut-wrenching scene of Jamie being flogged by Captain ‘Black Jack’ Randall on display for all to watch in the fortress’s courtyard.
- Hopetoun House and Estate. This gorgeous 17th-century stately home and estate was the filming location for several notable scenes throughout the Outlander TV series, but it’s most known for Midhope Castle which was featured as Lallybroch, Jamie’s ancestral home.

Its walls are built from ashlar (square-cut stone) and look remarkably like those of the nearby St Fillan’s parish church, which dates to the mid-1100s.
Aberdour Castle is in the village of Easter Aberdour, Fife, Scotland. Parts of the castle date from around 1200, making Aberdour one of the two oldest datable standing castles in Scotland, along with Castle Sween in Argyll, which was built at around the same time. [1]

Aberdour Castle was built in the 1100s and went on to serve generations of three noble families – including a Regent of Scotland. The Douglas family left their mark, raising the height of the hall-house to make Aberdour into a more typical tower house castle and adding further ranges of buildings.
