In 1956 Mangold enrolled in the illustration department at the Cleveland Institute of Art, but transferred to the fine arts division, where he studied painting, sculpture, and drawing. Mangold started displaying his work in commercial galleries while still a guard at the Museum. His first solo exhibition was held at the Fischbach Gallery in 1965. Today, Mangold continues to live and work in New York. A number of internationally renowned museums count Mangold’s work in its collections, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Tate, London; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
