David Goldberg was educated at William Ellis School and Hertford College, Oxford. He took a degree in psychology and went on to do his clinical work at St Thomas' Hospital. After house jobs at the National Hospital, Queen Square and the Brompton Hospital he studied psychiatry under Sir Aubrey Lewis at the Maudsley.
