Wong earned his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Master of Science (M.S.) in biochemical sciences from National Taiwan University in Taipei. He then received a Ph.D. in chemistry in 1982 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) under the direction of George M. Whitesides.
