Following his discharge from Butler in 1886, Halsted moved to Baltimore, Maryland, to join his friend William Welch in organizing and launching the new Johns Hopkins Hospital. Halsted began working in Welch's experimental laboratory, and he presented a paper at Harvard Medical School.
As a child, Halsted captured and dissected frogs at the country estate, and during his senior year at Yale, purchased Gray's Anatomy and Dalton's Physiology and attended a few clinics at Yale Medical School.

With a year at New York Hospital as a house physician Halsted completed all the formal training that was available in America. With the financial means of his family in 1878, Halsted set sail to further his medical education at the European centers of surgery and medical scholarship.

He graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at the University of Columbia in 1877 and soon took off for Europe, where he bore witness to the future of surgery, rubbing shoulders with some of the titans of western medicine.
