Feb 26, 2009 · Global map of Mars from Mariner 9 data (1971) Mariner 9 was the first Mars orbiter. The more than 7,000 images it acquired provided the first detailed views of all of Mars, revealing that the planet had both ancient cratered terrain and more modern tectonized and eroded areas.

With the Age of Discovery, during the 15th to 18th centuries, world maps became increasingly accurate; exploration of Antarctica, Australia, and the interior of Africa by western mapmakers was left to the 19th and early 20th century.
