Laurence Kerr Olivier, Baron Olivier OM (/ ˈ l ɒr ə n s ˈ k ɜːr ə ˈ l ɪ v i eɪ / LORR-ənss KUR ə-LIV-ee-ay; 22 May 1907 – 11 July 1989) was an English actor and director.
The son of an Anglican minister, Olivier attended All Saints Choir School, where at age nine he made his theatrical debut as Brutus in an abridgement of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.
Olivier became the first Artistic Director of the National Theatre in when it was formed in 1963. It was based at the Old Vic Theatre in Waterloo until the new building on the South Bank was completed seven years later.
Olivier, Laurence Kerr, Baron Olivier ( 1907–1989 ), actor and director, was born at 26 Wathen Road, Dorking, Surrey, on 22 May 1907, the younger son and youngest of the three children of the Revd Gerard Kerr Olivier (1869–1939) and his first wife, Agnes Louise, née Crookenden (1871–1920).
