John Rae was born at the Hall of Clestrain, Orphir, on 30th September 1813, one of seven surviving children. His father (also called John) was the estate factor for William Honyman, later Lord Armadale, the Lord Advocate of Scotland, who lived in Lanark.
John Rae, Orkneyman and seasoned wilderness traveller, had qualified as a surgeon in Edinburgh in 1832, aged only 19; he had seen virtually all the ailments and injuries that were likely to afflict people in the inhospitable environment of the Arctic.
An open invite has been extended to Orkney and the rest of the world to celebrate the life and deeds of John Rae on Thursday, 30 th September at noon by the John Rae Society that is building a legacy to his name.
