The following year Dempsey attended a brief course at the Senior Officers' School at Sheerness, before being posted to South Africa, where he served as a General Staff Officer Grade 2 (GSO2) with the Defence Forces of the Union of South Africa at the South African Army College at Roberts Heights near Pretoria, a posting which he enjoyed.
Feb 19, 2016 · Many will know that in General Dempsey’s 41-year career, he served multiple tours in Iraq – as well as being the Army Chief of Staff – before becoming Chairman. What is less well known is that he also earned a master’s degree in English at Duke (and continues to have an affinity for poetry!) and is Duke’s 2016 Rubenstein Fellow .
General Dempsey stepped down from his post as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in September of 2015. In early 2016, he began residency at Duke as a Rubinstein fellow.
