   I would not recommend Minna no Nihongo as a "self-study alone" book. I would recommend it if you have someone to guide you through it (a Japanese tutor, either a native or someone further along in their studies). If you're studying for N5, I would recommend a book designed to study for N5.

   • Basically, the way Minna no Nihongo works is that you're given the sentence patterns in the first three pages of each chapter, then you do the exercises literally copying the example sentence pattern, except changing it to use whatever the new word in each sentence is. This is also the part where you have to speak, at least for the B exercises.

   • The Minna Series is a great way to learn grammar but it doesn’t teach you kanji. Luckily for us there are a thousands of books dedicated to learning kanji. My recommended one is Nihongo Challenge Series. I’ve tried learning kanji many years after going to Japan and always failed or stopped practicing.
