It was released on Chinese New Year's Day (February 5th, 2019) and later picked up by Netflix on April 30th. A prequel, The Wandering Earth 2, starring Andy Lau and Wu Jing, was released in 2023. The end credits also pay tribute to Ng Man-tat, who had passed away in February 2021.
