Oct 22, 2021 · Commencing with the first stages of information storage, Fischer focuses on the emergence of complete writing systems in Mesopotamia in the fourth millennium BC. He documents the rise of Phoenician and its effect on the Greek alphabet, generating the many alphabetic scripts of the West.

Thus we have the following approximate dates of origin for writing: Mesopotamia 3100 BC, Egypt 3100–3000 BC, Crete 1750 BC, China 1200 BC, Meso-America 900 BC. On the basis of this chronology, it seems logical to assume that the idea of writing diffused gradually from Mesopotamia to other cultures.

The available evidence shows that writing arose autochthonously in three places of the world: in Mesopotamia about 3200 BeE, in China about 1250 BeE, and in Mesoamerica around 650 BCE. Devising a system of graphic symbols to represent the sounds of language is, in itseli, a remarkable achievement.
