Sep 3, 2024 · MONO COUNTY – Caltrans is closing U.S. 395 near Sonora Junction tomorrow at 6:00 am. The closure is part of the Sonora Junction Shoulders Project and is necessary for construction crews to install two wildlife crossings under the highway.
US-395 is closed from Hallelujah Junction (CA-70) to Buntingville, California, just outside of Susanville, due to the advancing Dixie Fire. If you're road-tripping from Klamath Falls (or Crater Lake) to Reno, this is the normal route.
US 395 returns to California as a freeway, but is soon downgraded to a divided highway just past the state line. The road follows Long Valley Creek along the edge of the Sierra towards Honey Lake.
