Feb 2, 2017 · Named after Abraham Lincoln’s Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, Stanton Institute, which later became known as Stanton High School, opened in 1868 as the first and only public secondary school for African-Americans in Reconstruction Florida.
The first two-story wooden structure was built in December 1868 on the corner of Bridge (later Broad) and Ashley Streets and dedicated as Stanton Normal School on April 10, 1869 by the U.S. Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands.
